Katherine DiGiovanni
I am a first-year PhD student at the University of Kentucky pursuing a degree in Sociology with a focus on disability studies. My scholarly interests lie at the intersection of medical sociology, mental health, and social networks. I am particularly interested in how social structures, institutions, and interpersonal connections shape access to care and well-being for individuals with disabilities.
I bring professional and leadership experience to my academic work. I currently serve in a leadership role as coordinator of UK's Leadership & Service Living-Learning Program (LLP), where I support student engagement and collaborative community initiatives. I have also worked with the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) in both Drug Overdose Prevention and Maternal and Child Health Sectors contributing to programs that promote health education and equitable access to resources. Additionally, I spent years within a public school system in special education, growing my understanding for the needs of students with various developmental disabilities.
Through my studies and future academic career, I hope to investigate the social determinants of health, the role of social networks in mental health outcomes, and the systemic barriers faced by marginalized populations. My long-term goal is to pursue a career in academia, with the goal of conducting research and teaching in areas related to disability, health, and social inequality. I hope to progress through my academic journey and advance knowledge that informs inclusive policies and practices, helping to create more equitable health and social systems.
